The Bricklayers’ Club is the extension group of The Brown Bauhaus Studio Architecture dedicated to the development of Filipino architects, apprentice, and architecture students. The Club focuses on socially responsive architectural activities by providing pro-bono design-build services to various entities such as public schools, barangay halls, police outposts, public parks, small private residences of under-served families, etc. The Club serves as a collaborative forum to share and cultivate ideas. Involving its members in direct contact with the public especially the underserved people, The Club envisions the following agendas:
- To realize the true role of the profession in the humanity.
Architecture is a social science serving the multicultural populace; therefore even people who cannot afford a professional architectural service should also be given modest architectural solutions.
- To educate the public about the significance of architecture not just as a profession but also its function to civilization as the highest form of art.
Working in collaboration with diverse clientele, creating efficient and modest architectural solutions can teach the public the impact of built structures to their lives’ improvement.
- To promote creativity, quality, and advancement in architecture education, apprenticeship, and practice.
The Club links its programs to the Comprehensive ALE Review + Preparation Program, Architectural Workshop Program, and the Continuing Architecture Education of The Brown Bauhaus Studio Architecture.
SKUL KO ‘TOH! A Collaborative Pro-Bono Architectural Design-Build Program For Schools
SKUL KO ‘TOH! A Collaborative Pro-Bono Architectural Design-Build Program For Schools is the pilot program of The Club in offering its charitable professional service to public (or private) elementary and high schools in the country.
The general scheme of the project is the participatory program wherein The Club members are the Designers working in a unique close collaboration with the Clients or the beneficiary schools. The concepts of the project will come directly from the end-users (students, teachers, parents, etc.) through a series of workshops. The Designers translate the ideas into graphical and model outputs with the participation of the students in the design process. In the construction phase, the Designers, The Club’s partners, and other volunteers build the conceived design. Sponsors and partners finance the project through cash or building material donations.
The program will educate the members especially the students, apprentices, and young architects in many fields of the profession (design, construction, theory, aesthetics, professional practice, sustainability, public relation, etc.). The public and most importantly the school children will learn a lot of the architectural processes and systems, the purpose and significance of architecture in improving society and the humanity.
